Deuteronomy 28 is a relevant message for our country at this time.   It begins with an “if and “then” scenario. “If” we will hear God’s commandments and do them, “then” all these blessings will come upon us (Vs 1-2).  If we do not hear and obey we will be under the curses listed in this chapter (Vs 15).

As a nation we have spent the past forty plus years eliminating the Word of God from our public life.  We have removed the Ten Commandments from our classrooms, our town squares and our Courthouses.  We have told God to get out of our lives as a nation by touting “a wall of separation between Church and State” (taking Thomas Jefferson’s words completely out of context).  As a result crime, delinquency, drug abuse, and the like are up.  We are clearly not “blessed in the city and blessed in the country”.

We are told that our children, our crops, our productivity, our storehouses will be blessed if we will hear and do God’s commandments (Vs. 4, 5, 8).  Close scrutiny will reveal that we have murdered over 40 million of our unborn since 1973.  We no longer produce goods and services as we once did.  Fires, floods and drought have depleted our harvests year after year till we are presently seeing food shortages and major price increases. 

Verse 12 says that we shall “lend to many nations and not borrow”.  We are seeing nearly half of the money we use for government programs (Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, etc) coming from money that we are borrowing from China and others; money that we must someday pay back.  The Fed keeps printing money for such a purpose with the unfortunate consequence of devaluing our currency leading to inflation.

A nation under God’s blessings fights its enemies and wins (Vs 7), but we’ve seen, since Vietnam, that our successes are few.  We flounder around without clear direction on what it is we are trying to accomplish, allowing Washington to direct our conflicts instead of the military leadership on the ground….what confusion !

Pestilence, sicknesses of every kind, without cure are under the curse (Vs 21, 22, 27, 60, 61).  Today we see antibiotic resistant infections on the rise.  Std’s, cancers, diabetes are out of control.

Verse 30 states that we shall buy a house and another will live in it.  Wow!  Sounds like the foreclosure epidemic we see.  The housing crisis brought on by bad policy mandating that banks give loans to people who could not afford them.

Verse 41 says we shall have children that we shall not enjoy because they shall go into captivity.  Consider the runaway problems, the sex trafficking, the drug culture and just plain rebellion and criminal behavior that is seen in many of our youth today.

“A nation will come against you from afar, from the end of the earth, as swift as an eagle flies, a nation whose language you shall not understand”(Vs 49).  On 9/11 we were attacked by Muslim extremists flying like an eagle into the Twin towers.  It goes on to say “a nation of mean countenance who will not regard the person of the old or show favor to the young”(Vs 50).   Radical Islam straps bombs on their young all in the name of their cause.

Ultimately this nation, under the curse, will see famine so severe that it will do the unthinkable in verses 53 thru 57.  Read it and weep!

We must wake up!  We have turned from God.  We have gone after other gods…the god of self indulgence. 

It is time to seek the Lord (2 Chronicles 7:14).  We can no longer be silent.  We still have freedom of speech.  We can still vote.  Find out who is willing to turn this ship of the USA around, back to its founding principles of limited government and personal responsibility, and put them in office.
